The Mapping Sciences Institute, Australia is a professional association, formerly known as the Australian Institute of Cartographers, which was incorporated in Melbourne on 30 September 1952.

Allied as cartographers were to surveying and with increasing diversification of tasks being undertaken by them, the need prevailed for professional independence and due recognition for their knowledge and skills.

Change in the nature of tasks being undertaken by cartographers has been a feature of the Institute since its inception. Whereas cartography is considered to be the science and art of map-making, the term mapping sciences reflects those disciplines that deal with the acquisition, management and communication of geospatial information as well as mapping and cartography.

Today the Mapping Sciences Institute, Australia welcomes people at all levels of professional development of individual members and organisations through their attendance at technical evenings, seminars and conferences. The Institute also publishes and distributes to members biannually 'Cartography' - a scientific journal featuring refereed papers by members and others.

In accordance with the Institute's Corporate Plan a series of Program Managers have been appointed to address such matters as Education, Research & Technology, Geospatial Information Infrastructure and Management.
